Dynamite Breaks Diamond's Back
Comic Reviews for the week ending 3/2/2025
Good morning, my friend,
It’s March. That means Diamond Comics Distribution has one month left to find its way out of the financial quagmire of Chapter 11 or risk oblivion.
Yes. Sure. That all sounds melodramatic, but the fundamental facts hold.
By March 25th, the comics distribution arm of Diamond needs to have an interested buyer on record. By April 1, the buyer needs to be locked in.
Let’s stay optimistic and assume someone out there would be interested in picking up the distribution business (and the millions in debt Diamond owes). What then?
Diamond Distribution will continue to resell comics from other distributors ala Penguin Random House (PRH) and Lunar, as well as subsist on the Publishers who stick with Diamond as their primary distributor.
Of the remaining Publishers, Dynamite is the last big fish in a rapidly shrinking pond.
Whether or not Dynamite can sustain Diamond is a matter of opinion and no small doubt, but if Dynamite decides to leave Diamond for PRH or Lunar, that’s it.
Fin, Finito, So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye.
Between you and me, I’ve heard rumors. Well, more than rumors from trusted sources that Dynamite’s partnership with Diamond isn’t long for this world. Expect a significant announcement between now and the start of Summer.
If those rumors are true, and Diamond can’t find an investor with a lot of patience and a lot of cash to burn to clean the slate, Diamond’s comic distribution business won’t be around much longer.
If you’re a small indie publisher, hedge your bets. I hear MASSIVE is looking to form an indie coalition.
If you’re a medium publisher, you’re almost too late to put those feelers out for a new distributor.
Get cracking, Folks. Time won’t wait for Diamond, and it seems, neither will Dynamite.
