Good morning, my friend,
By the time you read this, SDCC 2024 will be a memory in our rearview mirror. By all accounts, there were several cool bits that garner excitement for what’s to come.
In no particular order…
Jeff Lemire is returning to DC to write the JSA.
DC’s Round Robin competition is back, as is the classic bullet logo for DC Studios.
Marvel is starting up a new West Coast Avengers title where the focus is on redeeming classic villains, starting with Ultron.
We got brief looks at the forthcoming Fantastic Four film, including the big news that Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU to play… Doctor Doom(???)
Gail Simone will be helming a James Bond series for Dynamite.
Also, for Dynamite, the mid-sized publisher will publish more classic Warner Brothers properties, including Thundarr the Barbarian and Duck Tales.
Last but not least, Joe Quesada is returning to comics after leaving Marvel in 2022 to start a new venture called Amazing Comics. The new venture is a joint project with Mad Cave Studios and European publishing House Dupuis.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but these are the few highlights that caught my eye.
What do these announcements tell me about the Comics Industry during one of the biggest conventions of the year?
DC is doing more of the same or going slightly retro to right their floundering ship.
Marvel is attracting more attention for what’s happening on the big screen than on the pages.
The small- and mid-sized publishers are trying new things and taking risks, partly by capitalizing on the success of people and properties that worked in the past.
Despite the few shockers (RDJ as Doctor Doom???), SDCC 2024 comes across to me as a middle-of-the-road success.
If you’ve been paying attention to the conference and are particularly excited by one of the announcements above or one of the many others I didn’t mention, let me hear about it in the Comments.
Now, on to NYCC 2024!
