Good morning, my friend,
If you haven’t gotten to know me yet, I’m the Publisher and EIC of ComicalOpinions.com, but I’m a comics reviewer first and foremost. That means I read a LOT of comics and write reviews for almost as many (inside secret: I have help), but when you read and review a LOT of comics, there’s a tendency to get set in your personal opinions at the expense of seeing what creators have submitted with a bigger, better (possibly wiser) view.
I, just like everyone else who publishes content for mass consumption, am constantly at risk of getting lost in my bubble. Of thinking that my way of looking at something is the best way, the right way, the only way. The best way I can keep my views in check, and therefore ensure the reviews we publish are the best and most fair possible, is to surround myself with people who don’t agree on every topic when it comes to comics.
Along those lines, I was fortunate this week to participate in two comics-related live streams. One is focused on possibly the most popular superhero Manga in the world, My Hero Academia. The other is another round of the Comics Aficionados talking about developments from the past week.
Both relate to comics but cover radically different topics. As you can see, I’m not shy about offering my opinions, but I also admit to not getting everything right. (side note: I also tend to want to explain everything. I’m working on that.) Differing opinions keep me humble, in check, and (hopefully) gives me better insight into making sure the reviews we publish get more insightful, better, and more valuable.
I’m not paid to participate in these live streams, but there’s value in being put on the spot and hearing what other pros and pundits have to say. The goal is to bring awareness to certain topics that may not get enough attention and to help educate me with alternate views I may not have considered. It’s a win-win as long as we all go in with an open mind and a willingness to hear disagreement.
Please watch each stream, like/share/sub to each of the channels as Kerry and Wes are both fine folks, and allow yourself to hear alternate views. It’s good for you.
