Good morning, my friend,
The Comics Industry is under stress.
Rising costs, stagnant or lowered page rates, shipping problems, dropping reading satisfaction. It’s all doom and gloom… if you read Bleeding Cool or The Beat (I wouldn’t recommend it).
However, the AI “threat” keeps coming up because it’s not going away, and it’s only becoming more mainstream.
Why is AI not going away?
It’s fast, cheap, easy - the trifecta of innovation disruptors.
You might as well tell people not to use cars because doing so takes jobs away from horse & buggy manufacturers.
Humanity, by design, is driven to go higher, faster, further (*ugh*), so AI is the latest shiny spoon that that inspires humanity to do just that.
Unfortunately, yes, jobs will be lost, but huge opportunities are waiting for savvy individuals who adapt to the disruption to create something new.
A new way of making comics
A new way of printing and distribution
A new way of selling and marketing
The opportunity is there, primarily because we have no choice. The AI genie isn’t going back into its bottle, so we can either evolve or get left behind.
Two years ago, I wrote about this subject (more proof it’s not going away) to imagine how AI could be used for comics in a constructive way.
Give it a read and let me know if you think the ideas are still valid in the Comments Section below.
